Comparing AI Solutions: Chat, APIs, RAG and Local Models
Comparing AI tools solely on the quality of a single response overlooks maintenance costs, data control and integration capabilities.
Each category serves different purposes. The selection should follow the task and its requirements for data, processing time and reliability.
How the approaches work
Chat is suited to interactive human work. An API allows software to invoke a model and control the processing pipeline. RAG supplies a model with document excerpts found through retrieval. Local deployment specifies where the model runs but does not guarantee better answers.
When comparing AI tools, do not treat RAG and APIs as competing alternatives in every case. They address different architectural concerns and often work together.
Data control and technical requirements
Off-the-shelf applications usually give users less control over processing. With an API integration, inputs can be checked, outputs logged and error responses defined. A local installation gives control over the runtime environment but requires suitable infrastructure.
For AI consulting, break security down into data storage, access control, retention and permission to take actions rather than assigning one score to an entire solution category.
Operating and expansion costs
A subscription is predictable only within its plan terms and usage patterns. API billing usually depends on consumption and the parameters of the service. Local systems have compute and maintenance costs even without per-request charges to an external provider.
Choosing an AI solution for a business requires considering expected task volumes, quality requirements and the time needed for manual review.
How to run a fair test
Run the same cases with identical instructions and input information. Record the model version, settings and test date. Without those controls, differences may reflect inconsistent test conditions.
Score factual accuracy, completeness, source fidelity, time and total cost separately. A single aggregate score can conceal important trade-offs.
Comparing deployment approaches
| Solution | Typical use | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Chat | Manual queries and analysis | Human review of the output |
| API | Repeatable in-app operations | Validation, limits and authorization |
| RAG | Document-grounded answers | Retrieval quality and source freshness |
| Local model | Processing in a controlled environment | Resources and infrastructure maintenance |
